To establish a country's strong and successful foreign relations, savvy world leaders have
realized that depending solely on either coercive tactics (hard power) or persuasive strategies
(soft power) might fail in protecting national interests. As a result, the concept of smart power
has become essential. This balanced combination of both forceful and persuasive elements
enables leaders to skilfully face the complexities and challenges of international relations. The
relations between the United States and Iran have been marked by decades of geopolitical
tension; however, there was a notable shift in U.S.-Iran relations after President Barack
Obama came into power. The latter alongside his administration applied Smart Power
strategies in conjunction with its policies towards Iran. Thus, this study aims to examine the
application of smart power in Obama's approach towards US-Iran relations. |
