The Issues of Cooperation and Conflict in American/European Relations and their Impact on the Future of the Transatlantic Relations

Abstract

The present dissertation focuses on the issues of cooperation and conflict in American/European relations and its impact on the future of the transatlantic relations. Accordingly, the study highlights the history and the subsequent development of the transatlantic relations or relations between the European Union and the United Stated, because this is what the EU/US relationship is generally called in both official and research discourse. The work denotes that the two sides have many common values and concerns, and have grown increasingly interdependent in terms of security and economic prosperity. It also reveals the many conflicting issues that led to an obvious split in US/EU ties. The dissertation concludes that despite the fact that the transatlantic relationship faces many dangers, there will be no question of permanent split because the issues that bring the two sides together ultimately carry much greater weight that those that might divide them. Besides, the two sides of the Atlantic still have many basic things in common and still need each other due to extensive cooperation on a wide range of issues.
