Sodium hypochlorite solution, commonly known as bleach, is an effective disinfectant; however, its stability is highly dependent on pH, temperature, light exposure, and storage duration. Variations in these factors can lead to degradation of the active compound and a subsequent decrease in disinfection efficiency. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of bleach as a disinfectant in the treatment of drinking water at the Bouhamden Dam station (Guelma Province), by analyzing the influence of pH on its use, storage, and chemical stability. To this end, analyses were conducted to evaluate the concentration of hypochlorite ions (OCl⁻) and their chemical transformation as a function of pH. The results obtained from the iodometric, pH-metric, and spectrophotometric methods provided consistent evaluations of hypochlorite ion concentrations in bleach. The study of two pH ranges showed that high pH values (≥11) favor the stability of bleach during storage by limiting the degradation of active chlorine. Conversen_US
