Abstract: American exceptionalism has been historically referred to as the belief that the United States differs from other developed nations because of its national credo, historical evolution, or distinctive political and religious institutions. This dissertation examines the influence of American Exceptionalist thought on American foreign policy in the age of the contemporary “War on Terrorism.” The philosophy of American Exceptionalism has influenced the foreign policy decisions. The Exceptionalist narrative has also contributed to shaping the post- September 11 relationship between the United States and the rest of the world. The findings of this dissertation reveal that American exceptionalism has had a significant impact on United States foreign policy,it has played a crucial role in shaping the United States' perception of itself as a global leader and the defender of freedom and democracy.
