Abstract: | The water of the Bouhamden Dam is one of the most valuable resources for drinking water and irrigation in the Guelma region. However, the quality of these resources is constantly deteriorating in view of the numerous sources of pollution, which is why it is important to treat and control the quality of this water. Our study consisted in assessing the effectiveness of chlorination disinfection by determining the physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics in a first step, then the break point in a second step, to determine the optimal dose of chlorine required for disinfection of these waters. The disinfection tests carried out with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) have shown that these waters are very consuming of chlorine, because of their strong composition in organic and mineral matter. Residual chlorine was completely absent in raw water. After treatment, the obtained values are: 0.085 mg/l and 0.1 mg/l for the contact times T1=60 min and T2=120 min respectively. The determination of total and faecal coliforms revealed a total absence of pathogenic germs. The results obtained after the various tests conform to the national standards and those recommended by the WHO. Finally, we can say that the water of the Bouhamden Dam after chlorine treatment meets the standards of potability required by the Algerian and international standard according to the WHO is therefore of good quality on the physicochemical and microbiological level. All the results clearly demonstrate that the chlorination of surfaces water process can be used as an effective tool in the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms. |
