Skeletonization is a research topic in vision, image analysis and computer graphics, with applications in many fields, from engineering to medicine, entertainment, games and simulation, etc. A new model has been developed for the representation and characterization of 2D objects using algebraic concepts and complex structures. In this work, the designed topological skeletonization model employs the simplicial complex to represent the 2D triangulated mesh data. This model works with an algorithm following three steps: construction of an initial simplicial complex, labeling the complex primitives (application of the distance function) and complex reduction. This model is characterized by its ability to preserve the topological and geometric properties of shapes in a simple way and also offers a robust method to represent the 2D shape triangulation data, with promising results. Tests carried out on examples of 2D shapes show the success and effectiveness of this approach.en_US
