Abstract: This work aims to explore the different definitions of the Middle East and to investigate the linguistic, religious and ethnic diversity in the region. The dissertation attempts to explain the influence of this diversity. The study of the subject is motivated by the significant role that the US plays in the region and how it interferes in its internal affairs. More to the point, this work provides an overview about the impact of the United States on the region through sheding light on Iraq as an important state in the Middle East. Iraq is the heart of conflicts and the started point of the project of the Greater Middle East initiative. The involvement of this research is based on the examination and understanding of the characteristics of Iraq as a country, the interests of the US there, and the motives for redrawing the whole Middle East and the main reasons behind invading Iraq and bringing”reforms”to the country.
