This study examines the theme of assimilation in American ethnic literature. Ethnic writers tend to discuss immigrants’ life in America and their capability of assimilating to the new culture. The thesis explores positive as well as negative consequences of assimilation in Ha Jin's A Free Life (2007).The study reveals the impact of the notion of the ‘American Dream’ in shaping the process of assimilation. The desire to assimilate is often triggered by the pursuit of the American dream. The study records the protagonist’s journey of seeking a new life in a new country and all the opportunities this country offers him. Moreover, the thesis aims at discussing the pressure Asian immigrants endure. Finally, this study demonstrates the protagonist’s awareness about the danger of chasing blindly the American dream embodied in the material success and ignoring his own dream.en_US
